COURAGE

The Flipside of Fear

Fear is a concept that gets its attention primarily based on its consequences, and rarely from its root cause.  The paradox here is that the best way to overcome a specific fear is to understand its origin.

The main reason for this lack of acknowledgment of the root causes of fear is either because we don’t have the proper training necessary to ascertain the true origin or in other cases, these origins might have their genesis many years ago, even as far back as our childhood.

Let’s analyze the fears that we can work with. The ones with origins run deep and are difficult to find.  These fears make our lives miserable, paralyze us, hold us back from

reaching our goals and shadow our days. These fears are some of the worst enemies of success.  Fear takes us to our outer most limits and nervous edge.

How do fears originate?

Fear is an emotion generated by an idea in our brain and can impact all three of our centers: the intellectual, the emotional, and the physical. If we do not acknowledge that fear is rooted in the brain (from a preconceived idea), fear takes the reigns of our emotions and paralyzes us physically as well as intellectually.  This often happens when we are faced with an important life change.

Some of the fears that have been weighing on our shoulders for a long time, are generated by past experiences that have impacted us negatively, often reducing our self-confidence and leading to other problems.  Often these fears are engrained in us from an early age, perhaps as a result of our childhood experiences.  Some of these fears might include:

  • Fear of failure

  • Fear of what others will say

  • Fear of being used

  • Fear of the unknown

  • Fear of our own impulses such as: fear to enjoying too much, fear of being truthful to ourselves, fear of going against my educational values.

  • Fear of dreaming.

The feeling of fear is often disguised as bad temper, anguish, doubt, or irritability.  By being fearful because we might not consider ourselves up for a task, we start brewing insecurity that eventually boils into an intense outburst of anger.  Once this happens, we might experience a loss of energy that may last months.

When we feel threatened or misunderstood by someone, our imagination begins to fuel our fear, which can lead to isolation, depression, and anguish.

How do we conquer the fears that are ruining our life?

  • Consider getting professional assistance through a coach or other expert.

  • Bring your fear into the light.

  • Once we acknowledge our fear is just an idea behind the fearful emotion, patiently write what that fear is telling us.

  • Analyze your findings and try to determine what you are really scared of. Try to find the incorrect idea behind your fear.

  • Set down the journal for a few days and return to it later with a clearer mind.

Having acknowledged that our paralysis and inability to succeed, to love, to dream and to create, is due to fear, we can get some help to add a little courage and the “I can do it” attitude. Over time and with perseverance, we can silence the fear-generating voices in our heads.

Courage brings along a spirit of adventure, enthusiasm, and dreams of triumph.  All qualities that keep us focused on our goals and dreams. As we keep learning about our fears, we will identify much faster what is holding us back, and we might even learn how to use that paralyzing fear to our advantage.

Fear and courage both generate adrenaline and while fear uses it to leave us powerless, courage channels it towards reaching our most beautiful dreams.
